10 years ago, while working with some very smart people at Interunity Group (www.interunitygroup.com), I was fortunate enough to be exposed to thought leadership in how IT should relate to and impact the business. With research done in conjunction with a well know IT periodical of that time, we coined a term, “IT Demand Management” (ITDM) and published an article on CIO.com (see below).
Today’s terminology for what we were espousing back then is TBM, or Technology Business Management…
Effectively, the “context” in which IT exists and behaves in a business goes a long way to impacting the overall value of the business.
Take Amazon for example, their technologists did not see themselves as just a retailer (let alone a bookseller) and today they are competing with, and beating, the likes of IBM in $600M federal government IT projects. As first ITDM, and now TBM, highlight for C-level execs, IT can and should be a business game-changer in today’s global economy…if its not, corporate business value is being left on the table.
