Re: okta, their okta Cloud SSO whitepaper compares  cloud-based SSO with Microsoft ADFS.  Regardless of whether you are a Microsoft-only shop today, any IT organization should absolutely review this space now based upon its potential corporate impact across any/all cloud implementations (public, private and hybrid).

Kudos to Mr. Bertrand Leroux and and Mr. Mark Settle, CIOs at Activision and BMC Software, for “getting it;;” this is at least the second “true cloud” solution their firms are already using, well ahead of their peers (and competitors)  CONGRATS!!!!

From the okta whitepaper – “The Okta service provides directory services, single sign-on, strong authentication, provisioning, workflow, and built in reporting. It runs in the cloud on a secure, reliable, extensively audited platform and integrates deeply with on premises applications, directories, and identity management systems.

Forrester Digital Disruption

From today’s event:

Forrester conducts 400k consumer surveys annually (2nd largest number behind US census), as well as with 60k business surveys

CBSP methodology for product development

Speaker is Dr. in consumer psychology with focus on technology adoption…

Don’t appear to be many established companies represented…. While execs can easily bring them in, what about newer/younger/junior staff? How can you build a culture of innovation without building out your internal innovation base?

Key takeaway- “when companies internalize technology , they find disruptive new things to do” as compared to adopting technology..

“Innovating the Adjacent Possible” scale rather than “future of” scale

behind the tablet sales #’s Western Europe

From Channel Sales Boom for Android Tablets,

“In early 2013, Android took the lion’s share of the market – 63 percent – with iOS tablets snatching 36 percent.  Windows 8-based tablets held a marginal share of just one percent.”

…but one reseller claims “businesses tend to “write them off pretty quickly” due to security fears.  Windows 8-tablets will increase their market share once the new operating system is more established”

Is the reseller right or is this another case of an IT-only focused reseller misreading the evolving role of the business unit as the IT buyer?

#Innovation in IT…too Important to Leave to the Technologists | ChiefExecutive.net

Perspective on the “modern CIO” as the Chief “Integration” Officer where running IT as a business is no longer enough, it must be run “like” a business.

In Management Challenges for the 21st Century, legendary management thinker Peter F. Drucker wrote:

“Every organization needs one core competency – innovation.”

CIOs today have a key leadership role in driving innovation at their companies due to the integration of information technology throughout today’s modern business operations.

“There is no other C-suite role better positioned to drive value by working across business functions and operating units—integrating people, process and technologies in new and profitable ways.”

“Creativity” (innovation) 1 of 2 ways to make a living for the Class of 2013: You Can’t Make a Living Just by Solving Problems | LinkedIn

To tell you the truth, it was a bit scary when I started reading Class of 2013: You Can’t Make a Living Just by Solving Problems | LinkedIn, especially after my breakfast meeting with an unemployed acquaintance.  This acquaintance has worked for firms such as Bain, Mercer, CSC Index and Accenture but can’t find a job now.  His comments during our meeting were what Mr. Peppers points out in this article:

“In fact, if you can state something as a technical problem that has a solution – a task to be completed – then eventually this problem can and will be solved by computer:”

Mr. Peppers’ solution?  The first is people skills, knowing how to solve interpersonal challenges (e.g. management, negotiation, speaking, etc.).  The second is:

“The other way to beat the clock is not to focus on solving problems but on discovering them. Discovering new problems is something that computers can’t really do, and are unlikely to be able to do in your lifetime. Discovering new problems is otherwise known as “creativity.” “

While not everyone can be a “people person,” everyone can be creative….after all, that’s what makes us human :).

Can IT make an impact here? – U.S. mid-market continues to grow in 2013

In the Q1 2013 US middle market center quarterly report, U.S. mid-market continues to grow in 2013 moving investments into personnel and acquisitions, 2 of the 4 top mid-market business “challenges” can be directly impacted by innovation in IT.  While applying innovative IT to its business operations may not help address corporate tax concerns or healthcare costs,

innovative IT can surely help with the mid-market’s ability to maintain margins and control its cost of doing business.

In addition to helping the business with these challenges, IT can also help with “skills gaps issues holding down growth rates” by ensuring their own house is in order.

If “IT’s” not strategic, then why is it done in-house? Retrain/recertify/realign your IT staff to help the business become more agile.  As mentioned in the report link, if acquisitions are available, is your technology nimble enough to support the business?

#Innovation in IT, #Insurance and beyond…Can Electric Toothbrushes Yield Insurance-Relevant #Data? One Company Thinks So – Insurance & Technology

Can Electric Toothbrushes Yield Insurance-Relevant Data? One Company Thinks So – Insurance & Technology is a great example of an insurer, whichever one it is, taking a leadership role.

What could possibly be the value prop?  While it may be a “Reach,” its refreshing to see insurance industry thought leadership exploring all possible “cavities” for innovation.

Seriously, this is one example where a horizontal perspective (see http://www.itconnecter.com/technology-articles/for article) is relevant for innovation….retailers and CPG firms take notice…

IVIS-13 – for innovation in IT, FOCUS on business processes (as id’d by CFO’s – Gartner: BI Could Solve Most IT issues)

Gartner: BI Could Solve Most IT issues.  Along with business processes id’d as what should be the the major IT investment focus, add data (and hub-based MDM) and cloud (or as Saugatuck calls it, the “boundary-free enterprise.”

For IT execs, its important to recognize and accept that none of these focus on internalizing IT infrastructure, as has been the perspective taken with virtualizing desktops on-prem (or workspaces or…).
