IVIS-11 ; Windows Azure Active Directory Now Open for Business — Virtualization Review

Every company using AD should do an analysis of this solution asap,

especially SMBs using AD.  This is one of those areas where the vast majority of businesses would benefit in some fashion by moving their AD to the cloud.

If your infrastructure is too “complicated” or there are too many AD to AD trust relationships or whatever reason seems to exist to not make this a simple cost/benefit analysis should be challenged, especially in SMBs.

Do you agree? I do….Enterprise IT Will Be Out of Infrastructure Biz in 5 Years — Virtualization Review

Enterprise IT Will Be Out of Infrastructure Biz in 5 Years — Virtualization Review states within 5 years.  While the timeline may actually be a bit longer than that, the perspective is accurate.

IT’s innovation focus, and leadership, should be around business process, data and converged collaboration (using the cloud, preferably).  Focus on making IT as agile as your business needs you to be in your core competencies, including security/compliance/privacy and BCP/DR.

Free (w/strings attached)…open source code – Computerworld

“The problem is, many IT organizations aren’t applying good governance practices to open-source software.”

The concern cited by this article is not that open-source is bad, its that open-source not done properly introduces risks to a company. If IT as the corporate innovation leader was ahead of this, the risk to the company would be minimized.

Has your IT led your company down the right path to take advantage of open-source?

Open for debate? Mandatory BYOD Heading Your Way – CIO.com

Mandatory BYOD Heading Your Way – CIO.com claims BYOD will be an expected expense for employees to get/keep jobs.  Effectively, this article implies that much as an employee having a car in the suburbs to get to work is due course, having your own smartphone will become due course soon enough.

What do you think?

Corporate open-source project security, roots in lack of IT innovation? – Network World

Open-source projects may have different security concerns than do COTS (commercial off the shelf) projects, IT control being one.  However, if development life-cycle best practices are in place, through security QA testing, open-source projects should do fine.

Per the  pie chart, the problem may have its roots in lack of IT innovation.  An IT-led initiative would not have a tagline of “who’s in charge of open-source security…?”  When an innovative IT organization has invested up front in mapping out the use of emerging technologies (e.g. open-source), future users of that emerging technology will want to go to IT to lever IT’s existing best practices knowledgebase.

If open-source projects are happening and they aren’t following IT best practices, then it seems logical that these aren’t corporate IT-defined or led projects.

Why not?

Control and security of corporate open-source projects proves difficult – Network World.
