Is MDM, as Forrester Research calls it, a “heavy-handed approach?”

In this recent Network World article, Forrester Research calls mobile-device management ‘heavy-handed approach’ – Network World, Forrester’s perspective of #MDM is not new.  Craig Matthias of #Fairpoint Group  touched upon something similar in his 9/23/11 Informationweek article, “Is Mobile Device Management Dead?”  My “In the Clouds” article                                                  ( http://www.itconnecter.com/technology-articles/ )  also cited a concern with MDM:

With Daas support for BYOD offering more security, a comparison of implementing mobile device management before cloud desktops could be equated to equipping a horse-and-buggy with the newest safety equipment needed due to all the newfangled horseless carriages on the road.

Effectively, MDM has been an IT vendor driven way to try to control end-devices while the popularity of BYOD is due to its giving the end-user more control.  Is there any doubt that MDM as offered today has run its course?

China trip

An example of small town innovation… and these students will, in the not too distant future, be joining the workforce. They probably aren’t the type of people who will like to be dictated to in terms of what “end-device” can they use…

IT Innovation – are you mapping OpenLDAP vs AD?

With the re-emergence of #Apple in impacting corporate IT, not to mention #Google’s impact, #Microsoft’s stranglehold could be threatened.  With other commercial giants (e.g. #Oracle) and #open-source advocates (Apache Software Foundation) doing all they can to make this happen, it behooves corporate IT to proactively understand pros/cons of “what if” not Microsoft.   Comparing http://www.openldap.org with Microsoft AD “at a feature/function level” is a good place to start.

This is NOT a recommendation to implement an alternative directory service/structure but it is absolutely a recommendation to map pros/cons of OpenLDAP and AD.

As with any good risk management approach, does corporate IT know what they gain or what they lose if Microsoft continues to lose end-device mindshare?  In reviewing all the emerging tech news, compare how many times Microsoft is mentioned vis a vis VMWare, Apple and Google…and Facebook.   Losing mindshare is the first step to losing marketshare, is it not?

Why would Facebook be lumped in above?  Open Compute Project, or OCP is the answer.  Before thinking Microsoft is impervious, think about the potential impact to HP, Dell, IBM, Lenovo, Oracle/Sun, EMC et al from OCP.  OCP is already beginning to take serious mindshare from corporate HW buying decisions.

With continued desktop and application virtualization, could this same fate happen to Microsoft?  Or will they adapt and embrace cannibalization to position themselves for future industry leadership?

oldie but even more relevant today; Forrester on IT and Business Culture – CIO.com

In this 2008 CIO.com article ( Forrester Report Calls for IT Culture Overhaul – CIO.com.), one step cited to help bridge what the article called a “cultural gap” between business units and IT  was to have:

a strong network of people within IT who share information with the CIO on a regular basis.

Our experience in working with IT as their liaison into business units has shown the positive impact available from a focused effort.  Cultural shifts take a LONG time; on the other hand, tactical steps to move in that direction can be implemented today.

Why is this important to CIOs? – ICANN’s trademark clearinghouse launches today – Techworld.com

ICANN’s trademark clearinghouse launches today – Techworld.com describes a very simple, very basic way an innovative CIO can build their department’s internal brand.  What COO or head of Sales/Marketing wouldn’t appreciate getting a heads up about a way to capture and document a trademark?  As with any other innovation, time is short for CIOs to “get the word out” internally.
