VMware DaaS will be powered by Desktone | UP2V

With all the activity at VMWorld, this article touches upon a significant validation of Desktone as the DaaS platform leader ( VMware Desktop as a Service will be powered by Desktone | UP2V ).

Still the only multi-tenant solution for cloud hosted virtual desktops, Desktone partners are companies that believe in the potential of wide-spread use of DaaS.  Selecting Desktone over the on-prem VDI leaders (Citrix, VMWare View) requires stripping away biases and competitive “marketecture” and doing a comparative analysis of a platform’s cloud-readiness.

From existing Desktone partners that just “got it” early on (e.g. NaviSite, Kumo, et al) to those that did a DETAILED analysis over a few years time (e.g. Dell, VMWare, Cisco et al), Desktone will win.

For Desktone partners, this means they can begin not only becoming true advisors to their customers in the area of DaaS (and cloud) but that they can begin building their competencies in integrating DaaS with UC, including integrated endpoints from companies such as Dell Wyse.

TBM-like view from ITO Thought Leader

Thomas Young – ISG, ITO Thought Leader and Change Agent

– The RFP is dead

– Continued fragmentation of Technology Sourcing Market from one throat to choke to out-tasking

– Challenge is Service Integration over the next 3-5 years among out-tasking players

– Role of middleman must shift as emergent out-taskers are newbies to world of IT contracts and SLA’s

– Functional out-tasking Wave 1 (15-30% cost takeout) was labor arbitrage but now moving to Wave 2 labor automation (40-75% cost takeout)..
Indian outsourcers will only need 1/2 the people to deliver what they deliver today = significant bus model impact

– Impactful across all types of tech firms, including need for SW vendors to move from focus on SaaS and internal view to SaaS2, service as software

– Focus on the WHY business is done, not on the HOW

– Concept of Zero; understand how you can deliver what you deliver at no cost = autonomous service delivery

– Transparency on deals, shared risk/reward is the way; less procedural, less rigid

– CIOs risk disintermediation, most “rogue” behavior comes from CMO

– How to operate IT is table stakes; vertical savvy and empathy will win

– Bifurcate Run-The-Business and Change-The-Business; seperate the budgets so don’t rob Peter to pay Paul

IVIS-31 – Use Security/Privacy Policies to Improve Customer Relationships | MIT Sloan Executive Education Blog

IVIS-31, Use Security/Privacy Policies to Improve Customer Relationships

Next Step –  Review the article and determine if the same opportunity exists in your company.  If not, consider other security or privacy policies, legal regulations or even DR/BCP processes.  Can any of these be re-positioned by your company to change perception from these being technology limitations to unique opportunities for marketing or sales advantage?

In this MIT blog entry, Three Ways to Use Privacy Policies to Improve Customer Relationships | MIT Sloan Executive Education Blog, Professor Catherine Tucker takes what most often gets CIOs tagged with the “C-I-No” label and turns it around.

If a CIO can initiate this type of creative thinking with their CMO counterpart, this will give the CMO ideas on another way to possibly differentiate their company.  In addition, this will help build a level of trust in the CIO’s core competency as the corporate technology leader.

Cultural Framework for Innovation Excellence | The Seven Essential Domains for Innovation Leadership – the Work Mat Approach

Innovation Excellence | The Seven Essential Domains for Innovation Leadership – the Work Mat Approach describes a structural framework for building an innovation culture in a company.

Rather than attempting a big-bang approach focused solely on building a culture of innovation, it is important to combine tactical innovation “implementations” to achieve short-term successes.  These successes can then help in standing up the cultural framework.

IT can and should play a leadership role in identifying tactic-level opportunities and can start by a focus on data, process and integration.
