Another fincl take on #DaaS vs trad PCs – Channel Partners – JUL-AUG 2013

Channel Partners – JUL-AUG 2013 has a quick summary analysis of cost comparison of std PCs vs cloud-based DaaS.   The numbers are impressive, approximately 35% year 1 and 15% overall over 4 years.

With the price of DaaS continuing to decrease*, and the fact that moving to DaaS is a move to the cloud for a non-differentiating IT function should make this a no-brainer for any company.

*The $50 month shown is a decent price for everything included in the model ($300 thinclient, etc.); a great price would be about 10% less.

** If instead of buying thin clients, the model was geared to extending the life of existing PCs and re-using them as thin clients under an existing Microsoft SA agreement, the all-in price would be in the $30/user/month category.

*** AND if the scenario were to include Google Apps running on Linux clients, pricing could be sub $25/user/month and would also eliminate MS SA costs.

IVIS-24, #Innovate in IT from the trenches – Help Desk #Gamification at #Omnicare

IVIS-24, Innovation in IT should include bottoms up ideas and actions.

Next Step – “Incent” bottoms up innovation and highlight the first 3 implementable innovations.  PS  “Incent” is not solely cash.

Witness the great work done by Tim Deniston, Help Desk Analyst at Omnicare via this link Gamification at Omnicare.

…sheer brilliance in solving a real/current problem with an innovative approach.  Note that Omnicare IT “gets” the value of gamification and we are still very early with the application of gaming in solving real world business problems.  Note I use the term “business” problems and not just “IT” problems.

Kudos to Tim and to Omnicare for this great success story!

IVIS-23, Local “innovation” events – Mobile Gaming SIG at Boston Metrowest TechSandBox tonight

IVIS-23, Attend local “innovation” events, including innovation-specific focused events (e.g. http://mass.innovationnights.com/upcoming-event-dates) and others that may not have “innovation” in its name but feature innovation quite often.

Next step – register for the next event in your locale today while planning to get involved on a regular basis.

An example of a local event not having ‘innovation’ in its name is the Metrowest Tech Sandbox (western burbs of Boston, close to Worcester, MA). Tonight’s event is one example: Mobil Gaming UX SIG at TechSandBox: special demo… Tickets, Southborough – Eventbrite.

Regarding Innovation Nights, while originally launched in Massachusetts, Innovation Nights has and is expanding (SoCal, Germany, etc.).  Helping launch a local chapter should be on an CIO’s “to do” list, potentially using an intern to get started.

IT innovation – WiFi over TV frequencies, new use for old

West Virginia University Flips Switch on “Super Wi-Fi” System

Morgantown, W.Va. — West Virginia University this week became the first university in the U.S. to flip the switch on a system that uses vacant broadcast TV channels to provide the campus with wireless broadband Internet services. The initial phase of the project, built in partnership with the Advanced Internet Regions (AIR.U) consortium, utilizes “TV white spaces” — frequencies left empty when television stations moved to digital broadcasting — to provide free public Wi-Fi access for students and faculty at tram platforms. The technology has been dubbed “Super Wi-Fi,” since TV band spectrum can allow networks to broadcast Wi-Fi connections over several miles, as well as through hilly and forested terrain. “This may well offer a solution for the many West Virginia communities where broadband access continues to be an issue,” said John Campbell, the CIO at West Virginia University.

IT innovation via increasing decentralization of SW to business units | IT PRO

“…departmental bosses are, indeed, angling for on-demand solutions: “There’s more line-of-business executives buying directly via software-as-a-service,” he says. So, where does that leave the senior technology executive? Rode says there is no need for huge concern – yet.”
