innovation via open data app challenge (role of MDM?) | IT PRO

TfL takes part in open data app challenge | IT PRO is another story of the power of open data in the public sector.  Washington DC had success using a similar approach where they created an innovation “challenge” and saved their taxpayers nearly $2M in a single project (app design and app dev).

Any public organization would to well to understand whats needed to do similar activities on a recurring basis….applicability includes any government function, including helping with improved costing of private sector services based upon having better data to support cost reduction requests.

How about in the private sector?  Having a good handle and process around their data should allow them to abstract away enough to allow them to perform similar challenges…that’s where MDM is key.

Is this a “nail in the MS desktop & Office coffin?” -Apple’s web-based office software will force Google and Microsoft to up their game – Quartz

Apple’s web-based office software will force Google and Microsoft to up their game – Quartz….

Who da thunkit?  Google Office just isn’t a valid alternative to MS-Office; I know, I tried to make the switch from MS-Office to Google and it is what it was designed to be – minimalistic.  LibreOffice and OpenOffice are great alternatives but the general business user is less comfortable trying something they don’t know after using something that has worked well for so many years (MS-Office).

Now, though, while not loved by IT, everyone with an iPad or iPhone will want to try this….not sure what pricing is and not sure how big a compatibility issue there will be with Excel or Powerpoint (Word typically not a big deal) but this will give renewed life to those frustrated with Microsoft’s desktop OS licensing and costs (VDA?  Restrictions on cloud multi-tenancy?).

VERY interesting….

10 open source projects that are leading innovation | TechRepublic

10 open source projects that are leading innovation | TechRepublic harkens back to IVIS-7, Innovation through Open Source.  Along with fairly well known initiatives such as OpenStack (note no CloudStack in this list) and Android (allowing Google to surpass Apple), there are other lesser know names worth investigating.

I especially like Ubuntu Unity – “Ubuntu Unity may not be everyone’s desktop of choice, but there’s no denying that it has seriously challenged the way users think about and use the desktop interface. In fact, the Unity Dash search feature is already starting to find its way into Windows 8. The whole of Unity itself is also helping drive a sort of melding between desktops and mobile devices. The need to have one interface to rule them all will eventually extend its reach onto more and more platforms.

ForgeRock is very interesting, although the concept of open-source for security will probably take a while for the G5000.  With Microsoft AD well-entrenched, and the ability to easily utilize AD from Azure, this is another area Microsoft could position themselves as a cloud “middleware.”  Will they “seize the opportunity?”

IVIS-22, Innovation demands transparency – FusionCharts vs HighCharts vs Google Charts vs jQPlot vs extJS Charts vs Chart.js vs amCharts

IVIS-22, Innovation demands transparency

Next Step – Don’t be afraid to innovate using a point product vendor, if their product helps you meet today’s business requirements.  Feel free to refer to my Best’s Review article contrasting “best of breed” software vs “super suites.”

FusionCharts vs HighCharts vs Google Charts vs jQPlot vs extJS Charts vs Chart.js vs amCharts is a great summary comparing the leading analytics engines.  I’m not debating the content but love the fact FusionCharts’ dares to “go there.”  This type of chart helps everyone make more informed IT decisions simply by identifying key criteria to consider.

Kudos to FusionCharts!

“The Golden Age of Microsoft Windows Is Over,” is it really? – from Channelnomics

The Golden Age of Microsoft Windows Is Over …finally, an article that consolidates the current status of the Microsoft ecosystem.  The article touches upon a Microsoft reorg, which is key given the internal jockeying to achieve siloed revenue objectives.

The one item not touched upon in the article is the opportunity for Microsoft to establish themselves as the key middleware for the cloud.  Their long-term “coopetitor” Citrix just made XENserver open-source giving it new legs; their long-term competitor, Oracle, beat Microsoft to the punch in terms of a highly scalable truly multi-tenant dbase….and now Microsoft has to use Oracle 12C to allow Azure to compete with the likes of Amazon, Google, et al.

This example of Microsoft’s falling behind on a key cloud requirement is symptomatic of the internal challenges facing Microsoft.  Why is Windows 7/8/8.1 desktop still not allowed to be used in a multi-tenant fashion?

Shout out to Microsoft – Begin the process of establishing Windows as the cloud middleware of choice.  Put the desktop OS licensing issues aside for a minute but immediately let Windows desktops run on shared compute.  Holding back on this may make short-term sense for the Microsoft desktop OS group but not for Microsoft as a whole in the long-term

….mark my words…..
