From a survey of 4,500 IT professionals, this article compares the “risk perception” variation between public, private and hybrid #clouds. Unfortunately, the loss of IT control is the driver to these “risk” results.
Recommendation to IT: When comparing cloud risk to traditional outsourcer risk, the difference is minimal. If IT remains overly focused on cloud risk/control, business units will move to the cloud without IT, much as marketing moved to social media on their own. The only difference this time is that cloud transcends job functions and business and not only social media budgets will follow the cloud, but more and more IT budget will follow as well.

The UK’s information commissioner’s office (ICO) recently published #BYOD guidelines & the need for security & auditability. This “screams” #cloud-based virtual desktop (DaaS). Why #DaaS and not on-prem #VDI? Not only cost & ease of evaluating/deploying/scaling but w/a true DaaS cloud platform, employees or outsourcers can’t access the CEO/CFO/VP of HR’s desktop.
“Employers must have adequate controls in place to make sure information [stored on mobile devices] is kept secure,” said Rice.
“The cost of introducing these controls can range from being relatively modest to quite significant, depending on the type of processing being considered, and might even be greater than the initial savings expected.
“Certainly the sum will pale into insignificance when you consider the reputational damage caused by a serious data breach. This is why organisations must act now,” he added.
Interesting Oct’12 survey paper on the #BYOD oppty/challenge, citing #MDM as a solution but missing the boat on virtual desktop value (#DaaS or #VDI) for BYOD…though it does cite a feature of DaaS (role-based access) w/survey results/graphics. From MCPmag.com – …”More than 82 percent of organizations are using personally-owned smartphones or tablets to access corporate systems. The bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend seems innocuous enough to end users, but it creates serious security, compliance and support issues for IT departments.
In this Osterman Research paper, we discuss why the BYOD trend is growing so quickly and why support and content management becomes challenging. You’ll also learn the importance of having a BYOD strategy and policies in order to mitigate risks and maximize benefits.”
#Cisco study finds that “Next-generation #workspaces will be a reality for 76 percent of businesses by 2016…” From Ian Foddering, Cisco CTO UKI, “Three key pillars emerge: Simplify, Protect and Change & Grow. Get the first two right, and you pave the way for #innovation, greater connectivity, next-generation workspaces…”

…not sure if panel covered tradtl on-prem VDI security hole from outsourcers managing the stack. What’s to prevent access to CEO/CFO/HR/Payroll desktops?
That should be an important decision criteria when considering on-prem VDI vs a true cloud-based DaaS solution, audit trail and all.
“At RSA session, panelists argue that companies can better protect sensitive data and systems by using virtual desktop infrastructure, but warn that everything relies on the quality of the hypervisor.”
